The album cover challenge

What is Coverspot?

Coverspot turns familiar album artwork into a visual music challenge. Start with a handful of coloured squares, study the composition, then search for the album you recognise. Every skip brings the picture into sharper focus. You can also switch to artist answers, explore a different genre or decade, and keep playing at your own pace.

Coverspot is a free album cover guessing game built around artwork already in the SongSpot catalogue. Instead of hearing a song, you look for a memorable colour, portrait, landscape or arrangement of shapes. The picture begins at eight pixels across and gradually reveals more detail. No account, microphone or listening setup is needed to play.

How to play Coverspot

  1. 01

    Coverspot: 1. Read the picture

Look at your first coverspot image before searching. The strongest clues are usually the background colour, the position of a face and the contrast between light and dark areas. Pick a difficulty or use the genre, era and artist reels to explore a familiar part of the catalogue.

  2. 02

    Coverspot: 2. Search and choose

Type an album name into the coverspot search field and select a suggestion. The artist shown beside each album helps distinguish similar titles. On a phone, the search panel opens above the keyboard. Prefer identifying performers? Change the answer mode in the control panel before choosing an artist.

  3. 03

    Coverspot: 3. Reveal and repeat

Use Skip when you need a clearer clue. Coverspot offers five image sizes; giving up on the final size reveals the album and artist. A correct answer also opens the result card, with a link to the album on Apple Music. Choose another cover whenever you are ready.

Coverspot rules and scoring

Coverspot: Five levels of clarity

Every coverspot round starts at 8×8 pixels, followed by 16×16, 24×24, 32×32 and 48×48. The result shows the large artwork. Unlocked chips let you revisit a blurrier view without changing the current scoring level. The smallest image rewards recognition of the overall design.

Coverspot: Skipping and wrong answers

Skipping advances one coverspot level. At the fifth level, Give up ends the round. An incorrect guess adds a mistake but does not unlock a clearer picture or end the round. Take a moment to reconsider the colours and composition before selecting another search result.

Coverspot: Album or artist answers

Coverspot starts in album mode. Artist mode accepts the complete credited artist name, including joint credits. Standard and deluxe album versions can match when their underlying title and artist agree. Singles are excluded from the cover pool, while EP releases remain available to identify.

Coverspot: Points and session counts

A correct coverspot answer earns 1,000, 800, 600, 400 or 200 points at the current unlocked level. Named counts solved covers and Seen counts covers opened during this session. These are practice rounds with no leaderboard. Sharing a result creates a ticket linking back to this page.

Three visual clues for Coverspot

Coverspot: Start with colour

In coverspot, a broad wash of red, blue or black can survive even the smallest image. Think about the dominant background before trying to read lettering. Bright corners, a pale horizon or a single contrasting object can narrow your mental shortlist surprisingly quickly.

Coverspot: Follow the composition

A centred portrait feels different from a tiny figure in a wide landscape. Coverspot preserves those broad relationships even when fine details disappear. Notice symmetry, empty space and the direction of the subject. Compare the arrangement with your memory rather than guessing from one isolated square.

Coverspot: Use each sharper view

Before skipping in coverspot, keep two or three possible albums in mind. The next level may show the edge of a face, a familiar outfit or the placement of lettering. If the new detail contradicts your first idea, change direction instead of repeating the same guess.

Coverspot questions

Is Coverspot free to play?

Yes. Coverspot is a free practice game available directly in your browser. You can search for answers, change difficulty and continue with another cover without signing in. There is no paid mode or streaming account connection required for this page.

Coverspot: Do I need to hear any music?

No. Coverspot uses pictures as its clues, so you can play with sound off. Recognising the artwork is enough. If you would rather identify recordings by ear, follow the related links below to the short audio games on SongSpot.

Coverspot: Can I guess the artist instead?

Yes. Open the coverspot controls and switch from album to artist. Search results then list artists rather than albums. The full credited name must match: identifying only one member of a collaboration does not automatically solve a jointly credited cover.

Coverspot: Does a wrong guess make the image clearer?

No. A wrong coverspot answer leaves the current image level unchanged and records a mistake. Only Skip unlocks a clearer level. When the fifth level is already unlocked, the action becomes Give up and shows the answer without awarding points.

Will deluxe editions count as correct?

Coverspot accepts the same cover directly and also recognises matching album titles and artists after removing common edition suffixes. Deluxe, expanded and remastered editions can therefore match the standard title. Unrelated albums with similar names or different artists remain separate answers.

What happens if I refresh the page?

Coverspot keeps the current round, unlocked level, answer mode and filters in this browser tab for a short session. Refreshing restores an unexpired round. When its token expires, choose another cover to continue. Session information does not become an account history.

Can I narrow the album selection?

Yes. The coverspot reels let you choose a genre, era or artist from the existing catalogue. An album qualifies when at least one member song matches the selected filters. If your chosen difficulty has no unseen cover, the game uses another difficulty within those filters.

What if I have seen every cover?

Coverspot reports when there are no unseen covers left for your selection. Use the reset action to clear this page’s seen list and play that selection again. Your other SongSpot game progress stays separate, and there is no need to wait for a daily reset.
